Garand expressed his elation, stating, «This is something I’ll remember for the rest of my life. It was pretty special.» His performance included crucial saves, like a glove stop against Connor Bedard in the first period and a blocker save on a Landon Slaggert breakaway in the third. This was Garand’s second NHL start, following a 35-save effort in a shootout loss to Winnipeg on March 22. Coach Mike Sullivan lauded Garand’s consistency, remarking, «I thought he looked really solid in there. I know how hard he’s worked to get to this point.»
Adam Sykora netted his first career NHL goal with a wrist shot during a second-period 2-on-1 play. «I saw a spot under the blocker and I just tried to shoot it,» Sykora explained, adding, «I enjoyed the moment and hopefully I’ll get more.» He is now the sixth Rangers player this season to achieve his first NHL goal.
Defenseman Drew Fortescue, a 20-year-old making his NHL debut, contributed an assist during his 17:23 of ice time. Fortescue recalled the supportive atmosphere, saying, «They all came over to me and said something. That’s pretty cool.»
Beyond the young stars, J.T. Miller tallied a goal and two assists, while Jonny Brodzinski scored twice, helping New York end a six-game losing streak. Alexis Lafreniere also added a power-play goal in the third period.
For Chicago, Nick Lardis scored their lone goal. The Blackhawks continued their struggles, losing six of their last eight games and remaining 10 points adrift of Nashville for the Western Conference’s second wild-card spot. Goalie Arvid Soderblom made 33 saves. Playing with seven rookies, Chicago was outshot 16-4 in the second period after a more even first. Forward Tyler Bertuzzi acknowledged the shift, «We had a pretty good first, we were in the game. Something changed in the second and third and we just weren’t playing our game.»
