Pacers forward Aaron Nesmith noted its sudden appearance: «It was not here one day, up here the next.»
While the Pacers plan to acknowledge the banner at the arena before their October 23 regular season opener against the Oklahoma City Thunder, coach Rick Carlisle stated there would be no prolonged celebration.
«There`s not going to be a big thing about it,» Carlisle explained after practice. «It was a great run and really a lot of amazing things happened during that stretch. But you got to turn the page.»
This sentiment permeated the Pacers` training camp, as the team balanced the satisfaction of an unexpected playoff run to the NBA Finals with the sting of losing in Game 7 and the critical season-altering Achilles injury to Tyrese Haliburton early in that decisive game.
Haliburton`s torn Achilles was one of several significant playoff injuries that have reshaped the landscape of the 2025-26 Eastern Conference. Both of the last two Eastern Conference champions will now likely be without their star players for most or all of the upcoming season. Boston Celtics star Jayson Tatum also suffered a torn right Achilles in the conference semifinals. The Celtics had reached the conference finals in three consecutive years and four of the last five, while Indiana had made back-to-back conference finals appearances, seemingly poised for continued success with their young core and playoff experience.
This scenario forces both Boston and Indiana to navigate an entire season with their primary stars sidelined – the Pacers have confirmed Haliburton is out for the season, though the Celtics have not yet made a definitive statement on Tatum. Consequently, expectations for these teams, recent dominant forces in the East, are significantly lower.
«I think it`s exciting,» Celtics guard Derrick White remarked. «We`re not the hunted anymore. But just have that mindset of `We`re going to prove people wrong` and compete at a high level.»
Beyond their star players, both teams also saw other key roster changes. The Celtics traded away Jrue Holiday and Kristaps Porzingis, and lost Al Horford and Luke Kornet in free agency. The Pacers lost center Myles Turner in free agency. Separately, the Milwaukee Bucks reacted to their own Achilles injury crisis by waiving Damian Lillard and spreading his contract over five years after he was injured in the first round of the postseason.
This creates a potentially wide-open Eastern Conference, where several teams now feel they have a legitimate chance to reach the Finals, especially after witnessing Indiana`s unexpected deep run last year.
«You got to focus on what you have and not what you don`t have,» Carlisle emphasized. «We want to develop and maximize.»
«One of the things I`m most proud of the last two years is the development [of our young players]. We`re going to be looking to do the same thing. We got guys that still have upside, and we want them to realize that upside. And we want to maximize what we can with wins and losses.»
Despite both teams` intentions to win, projections are not optimistic about their chances, even in a less competitive conference. According to betting odds, the Celtics are currently ranked seventh in the East, behind teams like Detroit and Philadelphia, while Indiana holds the ninth-best odds.
However, sources indicate that neither the Celtics nor the Pacers intend to tank for a better draft pick or take a «gap year» from contention. Their primary goal remains to win as many games as possible, stay competitive, and foster the growth of different players in expanded roles.
«That`s not going to be part of the lexicon [on rebuilding] in our building, and that`s the way we`re going to focus moving forward,» Celtics president of basketball operations Brad Stevens affirmed this summer.
The reigning Eastern Conference champions share the same mindset.
«There`s been no internal talk about that,» Carlisle said regarding a gap year. «We want to compete at the highest level that we can.»
A Unique Coaching Ascent
Few coaches have stepped into an NBA head coaching role quite like Joe Mazzulla.
When Mazzulla took over as Celtics head coach three years ago, replacing Ime Udoka just before training camp, he became the youngest coach in the league at 34. His rapid rise saw him go from a Division II head coach to leading a team that has been a title contender for the past three seasons.
Throughout his tenure, Mazzulla`s intense focus has been a defining characteristic. His pre- and post-game interviews often go viral for their directness and dry, sometimes unintentional, humor. Last year, asked how the Celtics would embrace being defending champions, Mazzulla famously responded, «People are going to say the target is on our back, but I hope it`s right on our forehead between our eyes.»
Even with shifting external expectations for the Celtics, Mazzulla`s intensity remains undimmed.
«The same thing excites me every year,» Mazzulla stated. «I get excited about, `OK, where are we as far as the trends of the league? Where are we as far as what we`ve put in up until this point? Does it really maximize the roster that we have? Does it maximize the mindset that we have? Are we truly taking advantage of the strengths that we have?`»
Under Mazzulla, the Celtics have been known for their aggressive 3-point shooting, leading the league in attempts in the past two years and ranking second in his first season. This offensive style has been dubbed «Mazzulla ball.» However, Mazzulla recently downplayed this label, asserting that his strategy has always been dictated by the composition of his roster.
This year`s team, however, appears to lack the same offensive depth.
Instead of rigidly applying a single philosophy, Mazzulla aims to maximize the talent available on his current roster – a philosophy mirroring Carlisle`s approach almost a thousand miles away.
«I may have to coach completely differently than the year before,» Mazzulla explained. «In years past, you had an older, more experienced roster, four or five All-Stars on the team together. So your process is different.»
With a scoring gap on the roster, Derrick White could step into an even more significant role. Already recognized as one of the league`s top two-way guards, White is now positioned to become the clear secondary offensive option behind Jaylen Brown.
However, White has built his career by adapting to team needs. He believes that focusing on becoming a primary scorer would detract from the qualities that earned him a four-year, $126 million extension last year.
«I know that if I focus on, `I need to score 25 points` or something, I know I won`t play well,» White stated.
«If I just do what I do and play within the offense and do it, I might get 25 points a night, who knows? And so my goal is not, `Oh, JT is out, I can do more.` I still got to just be who I am and just do things I can to help us win games.»
Both Mazzulla and White see the Pacers as an example of how a less talented, but intensely playing, Boston team can still secure victories.
Indiana provided the blueprint last season, particularly in the playoffs, by exhausting opponents with a relentless, full-court, 48-minute playing style.
«It`s a copycat league, and you see success with it and now everybody tries to do it their own way,» White observed. «You`re probably going to see that a lot around the league, and you`ve definitely seen like last year — the pressure. Everybody`s trying to pick up full and these teams are trying to just create turnovers.»
The Pacers have grown accustomed to hearing such praise throughout the summer.
Aaron Nesmith recalled numerous fans approaching him during the offseason, expressing how the Pacers` style of play had rekindled their love for NBA basketball.
«I`ve had a lot of people come up to me this summer and just say, `You made me a fan of NBA basketball again,`» Nesmith shared.
Carlisle frequently heard the word «inspirational» associated with the Pacers throughout the summer.
«Really it`s a credit to the players,» Carlisle acknowledged. «You got to have special guys that are willing to pick up full court. … that was cool to be a part of that.»
Despite missing key players from last year, the fundamental principles of the Pacers` offense and system are expected to remain consistent. Carlisle confirmed that Bennedict Mathurin will move into the starting lineup and Andrew Nembhard will take on more primary ball-handling duties. While Indiana will leverage Nembhard`s strengths, such as playing downhill rather than relying as heavily on high pick-and-rolls as Haliburton did, the Pacers are committed to their core principles.
«We`re doing the same things,» Nembhard stated. «We`re still trying to push the pace, play randomly. A lot of different guys touching the ball. A lot of different actions.»
However, the Pacers must carefully balance this aggressive style, knowing the league will be better prepared for it this season.
«When you disrupt the industry the way we did, it`s going to disrupt back,» Carlisle warned. «And so we got to be ready for that. More teams are going to be more physical and so we`ve got to be ready to bring it up another notch.»
Haliburton`s Continued Presence
Even with his season-long injury, Tyrese Haliburton has remained a consistent and positive influence within the Pacers organization.
Haliburton, wearing a grey hoodie and shorts, stood under a basket, awaiting a rebound.
During a shooting competition at the end of practice between two roster players, Johnny Furphy and Taelon Peter, Haliburton actively encouraged them. Peter was attempting to match Furphy`s target score from beyond the 3-point line.
«Ooooh,» he egged Peter on with each shot. «Don`t let him beat you.»
When Peter missed, Haliburton quickly passed the ball back, «Don`t miss. You got two more.»
Peter accepted the challenge, sinking five consecutive shots to win.
Despite being sidelined for the entire season, Haliburton plans to maintain a regular presence with the team, both at home and on the road.
«We`ll hear his voice,» Carlisle said with a smile.
«He`s always going to have great energy. One thing about Ty, he has a consistent, positive spirit about life. He just loves it. He`s an early riser. He`s here before anybody in the morning. He`s tackled this rehab thing like a beast. It`ll be important to have him be a part of this every day.»
Haliburton is now walking without a brace or crutches and cheerfully confirmed he`s driving a car again. Indiana has already set opening night 2026 as the target return for last year`s breakout postseason star.
Jayson Tatum, however, has not ruled out a potential return this season. Five months post-injury, he has resumed light basketball activities, including a workout video before camp that fueled speculation about him playing at some point in the 2025-26 season – though neither Tatum nor the team has provided a definitive timeline.
«No pressure to return back any sooner than when I`m 100 percent healthy,» Tatum stated at Celtics media day. «No pressure from Brad, Joe, the team, the organization. The most important thing is that I`m 100 percent recovered and healthy whenever I do come back.»
Tatum`s comment highlights the peculiar nature of this season for both Boston and Indiana. For both teams, the most crucial developments won`t occur on the court but in the recovery processes of their injured stars, holding the promise of brighter futures.
Instead of allowing this to turn the season into a wasted effort, the Celtics and Pacers are using it as motivation, each in their own way, to make this year special regardless.
«It doesn`t really matter what people believe or what they say,» Nesmith concluded. «They haven`t believed in us in three years. We surprise them every single year. I don`t see what makes this year any different.»
