Former teammate Smicer suggests that Steven Gerrard`s ideal path to becoming Liverpool`s future head coach involves managing either Wrexham or Birmingham. Both Championship clubs, linked with Gerrard as a potential successor to Phil Parkinson at Wrexham, are seen as excellent stepping stones for the former Reds midfielder. These two teams are set to play each other on Friday night.
Gerrard began his senior managerial journey in 2018 with Rangers, followed by spells at Aston Villa in 2021 and Al-Ettifaq in 2023. The 45-year-old has been without a club since his departure from the Saudi team in January of this year.

In a recent interview, Smicer remarked, «When joining a club, it`s crucial to understand its aspirations and your own trajectory. Aligning with a financially unstable club with no clear future isn`t advisable.» He continued, acknowledging Gerrard`s legendary playing career: «Steven Gerrard was an incredible player, among the best I ever played with. Yet, as a manager, he`s still relatively young. His reputation in English, European, and global football is immense; Stevie is exceptional. I understand his winning mindset; he desires a club where he can genuinely compete, lead a robust team, and build something significant. Therefore, if a club presents him with achievable future plans, it will undoubtedly pique his interest.»
Smicer also expressed his belief that Gerrard could eventually manage Liverpool, stating:
«A club must have a vision and ambition. When asked if he could manage Liverpool someday, I believe Stevie G absolutely can. In my view, he would make an excellent Liverpool manager. However, only time will tell. He first needs to achieve success with a team. Perhaps Birmingham or Wrexham could provide that platform. If he finds success there, then why not Liverpool in the future?»
Ahead of their Friday encounter, Wrexham holds the 15th position in the Championship, while Birmingham is 11th. Both teams are eager for a crucial win, making this match between two prominent second-tier clubs a highly anticipated event.
