«Above all, I’m just disappointed for Jimmy,» Kerr stated before Tuesday’s home game against Toronto. «He was having an exceptional season, and in the last few weeks, he was truly playing at his peak. For him personally, in the midst of a fantastic season brimming with potential and excitement for the team’s performance, I feel absolutely terrible that he’ll miss the remainder of the year. I understand injuries are an inherent part of the sport, but this one certainly stings.»
Butler’s knee gave way upon landing, prompting him to cry out in pain, grimace, and clutch his knee while on the ground for several minutes. Teammates Gary Payton II and Buddy Hield had to help him off the court and to the locker room after his fall on the offensive end. Once he managed to stand with assistance, he was unable to bear any weight on the injured knee.
In just under 21 minutes on court, Butler recorded 17 points on 6-for-11 shooting, along with four assists and three rebounds. In that particular game, Brandin Podzeimski was Golden State’s top scorer with 24 points, followed by Stephen Curry with 19, and Jimmy Butler III with 17. For the season as a whole, Butler had been a pivotal offensive force, averaging 20 points, 5.6 rebounds, and 4.9 assists.
Kerr mentioned that the team hadn’t collectively discussed Butler’s absence yet, as «everyone received the news after we dispersed last night.» He added, «You just have to view it factually. We understand; this is part of the NBA, part of sports.»
«I’m not going to waste time analyzing our position within the NBA’s hierarchy,» Kerr affirmed. «My focus will be on what we can do to win tonight and the next game. Kerr intends to experiment with various player rotations and suggested that Jonathan Kuminga «could be» integrated into the lineup, despite having been sidelined for over a month (missing 16 consecutive games since December 18, and 19 out of 20 overall). Kerr expressed his belief that Kuminga is eager to play and remain with the team, notwithstanding ongoing trade speculations ahead of the February 5th deadline.
«He’s been with us for four years, so we’re confident in his abilities and how he can contribute,» Kerr commented.
Kerr anticipates that both Al Horford and De’Anthony Melton will maintain their crucial roles within the team.
«I believe we possess sufficient talent to compete effectively,» Kerr asserted. «Al and Melt have introduced a distinct dynamic, and many of our young players — such as Quinten Post and Will Richard — are prepared and have already started contributing. We have depth, which allows us to sustain our momentum. Naturally, we will miss Jimmy; he is undeniably one of the league’s premier players, and his absence cannot be understated or trivialized. However, we will play with the roster we have, and I am confident in our current group.»
